In this particular example, which I consider to be a mid-level
restoration, there were only a couple of things that needed to be done to
properly restore the image, but the necessary detail of the digital hand
coloring was quite time consuming:

Remove various marks and stains. |

Lessen the contrast slightly to bring out facial details. |
|
Digitally hand color the image for a more life-like effect. |
